Deer at the stable

The Bruderhaus wildlife park is a 6 hectare zoo in the middle of the Eschenberg Forest , south of Winterthur . The park is an important local recreation area for Winterthur.

The park is involved in reintroduction projects for the Przewalski horse , the Vietnamese sika deer and the bison . Eight original horses have already been released into the wild in the Gobi desert .

The wildlife park sees itself as a "meeting place between humans and animals, as a home for endangered species, as a place for environmental education and for promoting understanding of nature in general". The Bruderhaus wildlife park is open all year round, and entry is free. There is a restaurant in the wildlife park. The park is home to the following species: lynxes , wolves , bison , Vietnamese sika deer , red deer , fallow deer , mouflon , wild boar and Przewalski horses .

History of the plant

The Bruderhaus Wildlife Park was founded in 1890 by the Wildlife Park Association. As early as 1902, maintenance and operation were transferred to the Transport and Improvement Association . Feeding and caring for the animals were the responsibility of the host of the brother house, whose origins go back to the 14th century. In 1945 the park areas had to be reduced due to the poor condition of the enclosures. The remaining facilities were renovated. In 1946, the municipal forest administration took over the structural maintenance and in 1952 the entire operation. The animal population at that time consisted of 6 red deer, 9 fallow deer and 11 sika deer.

From 1966 to 1969 the facilities were completely renovated and an educational forest trail was set up. A generous expansion project was rejected in 1972. In 1975 a deer shelter was built to replace the two old, dilapidated stables. In 1977 the enclosures were redistributed and the bison enclosure was set up and a pair of bison from the Langenberg wildlife park was established , financed by the Bruderhaus wildlife park association. In addition, a new wild boar shed was built. A lynx enclosure was set up in 1981. In 1988 the geology educational path along the Wildparkstrasse was set up, donated by the Natural Science Society Winterthur, and in 1990 four mouflons were used in the fallow deer enclosure . In 1991 a wild horse facility was built. Two wild horses from Oberwil and a horse from Vienna-Schönbrunn were used in this. In addition, the Sika deer group has been replaced by three pure-blooded Vietnamese deer as the third rare game species.

Since 1997, the Bruderhaus Wildlife Park has been participating in the Gobi-Takhi project for the reintroduction of primeval horses in the wild in the Gobi desert . In the following year, the diaper hiking trail was set up and in 1999 a modern, species-appropriate lynx enclosure to replace the old facility.

Since 2001, the newly founded wildlife park association Bruderhaus has been publishing Wildlife Park News which, in accordance with the objectives of the park, reports on the wildlife park itself but also on environmental projects such as the reintroduction of the Przewalski horses and local animal species.

On March 28, 2004 the bird nature trail was opened as a joint project with the Nature and Bird Protection Association Seen. The Zürcher Tierschutz became a partner of the wildlife park in 2005 and thus enables the implementation of projects to improve animal husbandry in the park.

On August 23, 2008 the newly built wolf enclosure was inaugurated. In the meantime, the wolves have already had cubs twice, which has brought a greater number of spectators to the wildlife park.

Development concept 2020

A development concept exists for the Bruderhaus wildlife park. This provides for an enlargement of the wildlife park to double the current area and three new animal species: fox , badger and Mangalitza . The two main goals of these measures are to increase the attractiveness for visitors as well as better animal and animal welfare keeping of the animal species. The entire development concept was divided into nine sub-projects, with the implementation of the wolf enclosure in 2008, the first of these sub-projects was completed. For the second sub-project, the implementation of the Przewalskipferd - Mouflon community facility , a building permit has been available since 2009; completion is planned for the third quarter of 2012. The complete implementation of the concept by 2020 is questionable, however, as the zoo is dependent on private support, as the expansion cannot be fully financed from city funds.

In May 2018 it became known that the wildlife park association is planning to build a brown bear enclosure in the Bruderhaus wildlife park . The plans for this are currently with the Winterthur city council.

reachability

From the beginning of March to the end of November there is a bus line to the Bruderhaus on the weekend and on Wednesday afternoons with line 12 (HB - Bruderhaus) from Stadtbus Winterthur .
