Wildlife sanctuary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under undisturbed wildlife area is understood in German-speaking protected areas in conservation , which are for the protection and conservation of wild species of importance. These areas are also relevant for hunting.

General

initial situation

Wildlife sanctuaries serve to protect wild species from the constantly expanding influence of human activities in forests and open land and to offer them a safe haven.

The spatial and temporal expansion competes with the need of wild animals for undisturbed habitat. The consequences of dwindling opportunities to retreat can have negative effects on the individual and population levels of the animals. Scientific studies identify a variety of disruptive effects and related physiological and behavior-based reactions in wild animals.

For example, an increased concentration of stress hormones, more frequent escape reactions and an adaptation of the habitats used in recreational areas intensively used by people can be determined. This can also have negative consequences for humans. Due to the increased secrecy, hunting can be made more difficult or the observability of wild animals for the population can be reduced.

Various interests such as hunting , agriculture and forestry , tourism , nature and animal protection harbor great potential for conflict.

Target species

In Baden-Württemberg, all animal species that are listed as protection , development or use species according to Appendix 1 JWMG (to Section 7 Paragraph 3) can be defined as target species for wilderness areas. The designation of the area is possible for one or more animal species.

aims

Wildlife rest areas (WRG) act as undisturbed retreats for wild animals, especially during the winter, breeding, rearing and moulting season. Wildlife rest areas should enable the natural activities of wild animals to be carried out undisturbed. Wild animals should be able to live out their natural behavior undisturbed here.

use

  • Forest use: animals can be directed to less economically profitable locations by means of game rest areas. By enabling undisturbed food intake in the WRG, browsing and peeling damage can be prevented.
  • Agricultural use: WRGs can relieve the pressure on cultivated agricultural areas if WRGs are more attractive as food and retreat areas.
  • Hunting practice: Adapted hunting methods, e.g. interval hunting, can increase the effectiveness of the hunt and make wild animals more visible to the population.
  • Tourism and experiencing nature: Clear delimitation of areas enables improved planning security for tourism projects (infrastructure, events). It is possible to use the designation of wilderness areas to compensate for the requested recreational infrastructure.

Legally

In Baden-Württemberg, the first WSGs were set up on July 15, 1986 by the Freiburg Forestry Directorate with reference to Section 38 of the State Forest Act ( LWaldG ).

The text of the law authorizes forest owners, among other things, for reasons of game management and to protect interests worthy of protection, to limit the right to enter the forest area. In addition, it was possible to designate game protection areas according to Section 24 of the State Hunting Act ( LJagdG ) ( expired in 2015).

In April 2015, the LJagdG was replaced by the Hunting and Wildlife Management Act ( JWMG ). In the course of the amendment to the Hunting Act, the former designation of wildlife sanctuaries was changed to wilderness areas .
