Portrait of Wilhelm Holderied

Wilhelm L. Holderied (born April 11, 1940 in Kaufbeuren ) is a German painter and sculptor. He was best known for the Land Art work of art at Munich Airport, the earth symbol "An island for time" .

Life

As a child, Holderied was fascinated by flying, influenced by the Second World War, which was strengthened during his youth with his interest in space travel. His travels later took him to Greece, Cameroon, Ecuador, Spain and Mexico, which he visited most often in search of his roots. In 1965 he began his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which he completed in 1971 under Josef Oberberger's master class. Holderied initially worked as a painter in the two-dimensional picture plane, later then in the three-dimensional plane with object boxes in which he gathered everyday finds into icons critical of civilization. Later he mainly worked in sculpture and land art projects, the most famous of which is perhaps the twelve hectare earth symbol "An island for time" at the new Munich Airport (in collaboration with Karl Schlamminger). Holderied dealt with signs and traces, with weights and shadows and masks, from which sculptural waymarks are created - earth signs, moon signs, watermarks, stone signs. His works mainly deal with such symbols, as he sees in them a deeper effect on humanity and therefore chooses them as a pictorial means of expression.

Holderied lives and works in Munich and Geretsried. He has been married to the architect Ruth Bölle since 2000.

Country Art

Land type - earth sign

In the Land Art projects, Holderied realized the earth symbol "An island for time" at Munich Airport and the stone symbol "The stone magnet" in Kronach. He plans the moon sign "The Roots of Silence" in the Sinus Iridum of the earth-leaning side of the moon. The traces left by people there were the trigger for planning an earthly sign for the non-functional and unknown on the moon. In order to be able to recognize it from the earth, an extension of about 125 × 60 kilometers is planned for the moon sign.

Sculptures

Sculpture - Gate of the Wind

Holderied realized the sculptures such as "The Gate of the Wind" in Lauingen ad Donau as well as "The patient roots" in Memmingen and the flight sculpture "The patient journey" in Munich.

Scenic actions

Scenic action - playing the flute from the air

Since the late 1970s, Wilhelm Holderied himself has performed or staged many scenic actions for his exhibitions and projects. His best-known representations include playing the flute from above and wearing masks. The parallelism of his imagery between reality and appearance is an expression of his intensive search for the meaning of our being.

Graphic editions

A total of 8 graphic editions have been published since 1970, with which he accompanies his land art and sculpture projects. It was particularly important to Holderied to combine visual language with poetic language. So z. For example, the bibliophile print, “Sworn with moss and stone”, which he underlined with passages of poetry by the poet Wolf-Peter Schnetz, as well as the graphic edition “In the rhythm of the waves” for the watermark project for Hannover-Langenhagen Airport.
