Wilhelm Simon (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Simon (born September 26, 1929 in Fahrwangen , Switzerland ; † November 17, 1992 ), also called Willy Simon , was a Swiss chemist and professor at the ETH Zurich . He is the inventor of the functional principle of today's potassium-selective electrodes .

Wilhelm Simon received his diploma as an engineer-chemist in August 1953; afterwards he worked in the organic-chemical laboratory of Prof. Leopold Ružička at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, supervised by Edgar Heilbronner . He received his doctorate in 1956 and completed his habilitation in 1960. In 1967 he became associate professor , in 1970 he was given a full professorship in chemistry. Wilhelm Simon published over 450 scientific papers; he supervised 230 diploma students and 115 doctoral students. One of his main areas of work was analytical chemistry , he developed apparatus for the fully automatic determination of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. After studying ion transport through artificial membranes, he developed the modern potassium-selective electrode .

Honors

Wilhelm Simon received many honors, including - together with Alfred Benninghoven - the Fritz Pregl Medal of the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry; the Simon Widmer Award was named after him and Michael Widmer.
