Alfred Benninghoven

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Benninghoven (born February 8, 1932 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 22, 2017 ) was a German physicist .

Life

Alfred Benninghoven studied physics in Paris and Cologne , was founded in 1961 in Cologne with Fritz Kirchner (1896-1967) with a thesis on the behavior of alkali vapors in high vacuum to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. In 1965 he completed his habilitation in Cologne.

He was a professor at the University of Cologne (1965–1973) and full professor for experimental physics as well as director of the Physics Institute at the University of Münster (1973–1999). In 1997 he retired.

Act

Benninghoven dealt with vacuum physics, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and surface analysis . In 1969 in Münster he developed Static SIMS, a SIMS method that examined only thin surface layers of a sample and therefore caused minimal damage.

In 1990 he and Wilhelm Simon received the Fritz Pregl Medal of the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry. He was president of the German Vacuum Society.

In 1989 he founded the company IONTOF (for time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) with Ewald Niehuis and Thomas Heller.
