Wilhelm "Willi" Anton Thomas (born September 24, 1948 in Jennersdorf ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and driving instructor. He was a member of the Burgenland Landtag from 1986 to 2005 and was mayor of Jennersdorf from 1992 to 2016 .

Life

Thomas was born as the son of the farmer Anton Thomas from Jennersdorf, where he also attended elementary and secondary school. From 1962 he worked in his parents' farm before he became an office worker in a private company in 1965. He then worked from 1969 to 1972 as a driving instructor at a driving school in Jennersdorf.

Between January 1973 and July 1986 Thomas worked as the ÖVP district party secretary in Jennersdorf.

Thomas began his political career as district chairman of the Young People's Party (JVP) in Jennersdorf, where he held this office between 1970 and 1978. He was also regional chairman of the JVP Burgenland between 1977 and 1980 and was local chairman of the ÖAAB -Jennersdorf from 1975 to 1990 . In 1977 he was elected to the Jennersdorf municipal council, from 1982 he acted as second deputy mayor and from 1987 as first deputy mayor. On October 18, 1992, he was finally elected mayor of the town of Jennersdorf. In addition, he was active within the party from November 1985 as ÖVP district party chairman in the Jennersdorf district and represented the ÖVP between January 27, 1986 and October 24, 2005 in the Burgenland state parliament. In November 2016, Wilhelm Thomas announced that he would step down as mayor and transfer the office of mayor to Vice Mayor Bernhard Hirczy .
