Wilhelm Wester

Wilhelm Wester (born March 5, 1889 in Elberfeld , † January 26, 1960 in Düren ) was the formative pastor of the Evangelical Church in Düren from 1927 to 1959.

From 1918 until his death he was with Agathe geb. Müller (1897 to 1963) married. His two sons Heinz (* 1920) and Hans-Jürgen (* 1923) both died in 1944. His daughter Doris was born in 1921. From 1921 to 1926 Wester was pastor in Hörde near Dortmund.

During the Nazi period of tyranny in particular , he courageously defended the freedom of the Christian faith in lectures and sermons, so that he was arrested by the Gestapo from March to October 1940 and was banned from living in Rhineland and Westphalia until the end of the war. His return to the community was made more difficult because his undogmatic theological approach also meant he had to overcome resistance in the Rhenish church and in his own community. A letter from the Association of People Persecuted by the Nazi Regime (VVN), Kreisverband Düren, dated November 21, 1947 to the mayor of the city of Düren is signed with Wilhelm Wester, Secretary.

He played a key role in the theological conception of the Christ Church in Düren (commissioned in 1954).
