Wilhelmjstrasse 5 (Usingen)
The house at Wilhelmjstrasse 5 in Usingen , a town in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse , was built in 1577/1588. The half-timbered house is a protected architectural monument .
Like the neighboring house on the left, Wilhelmjstrasse 3 , it was built by Wendel Karter, the administrator of the Cistercian convent Thron bei Wehrheim . Both houses are therefore called "karter houses". The vaulted cellar with the sandstone portal has been preserved from the original structure. It is one of the few buildings that were built before the Usingen fire in 1692 . The structure is a simplified reconstruction of the original three-zone building. The keystone of the vault shows a coat of arms (originally colored), the initials WK and EB and the year 1577. The original corner post facing the palace square bears the date June 2, 1578. A dendrological examination showed that this beam was cut in 1577.
Today the building is used as a town hall cafe on the ground floor. The upper floors are used by the city administration.
