The Wilkes Subglacial Basin is a large basin in East Antarctica that is completely covered by glacial ice . It is south of the George V coast and west of the Prince Albert Mountains in Victoria Land .
American seismologists determined its extent between 1958 and 1960. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1961 because of its proximity to Wilkesland to the west and after Charles Wilkes (1798–1877), head of the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) where the George V coast had been explored.
