Willard Mullin

Willard Mullin (born September 14, 1902 in Franklin (Ohio) , † December 20, 1978 ) was an American sports cartoonist . His best known work was the "Brooklyn Bum", a baseball cartoon series about the Brooklyn Dodgers .

As a young man, Mullin had an accident at work and swore to become an artist. He became an employee of the Los Angeles Herald newspaper , where he learned how to retouch photos with a brush and how to work under time pressure. Soon after, he began drawing cartoons for the paper. His particularly plastic style became known and appreciated. After 12 years with the Herald , he went to New York City and published daily cartoons for the EW Scripps Company in the New York World-Telegram and Sun newspaper for decades and was also published in Sporting News or Collier’s magazines.
