Master of Castelsardo: The Archangel Michael, (around 1500, Castelsardo, Sardinia)

As Master of Castelsardo (* before 1486 ; † after 1515 ) one at the beginning that is Renaissance on Sardinia working painter called. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the altarpieces he painted around 1500 for the Cathedral of Sant 'Antonio Abate in Castelsardo on Sardinia. These pictures are Spanish in form and function and were placed in the church behind the altar. Significant fragments can still be found in this church today, including a picture of a Madonna among angels playing music on the main altar .

Castelsardo passed into the possession of the Aragonese Crown in the second half of the fifteenth century and the art of Sardinia was then influenced by the Catalan late Gothic . Their style already shows a transition to early forms of the Renaissance and the master of Castelsardo also shows such influence on Spanish-Catalan painting. He could have received his training in Barcelona . Also Valencia comes as the origin in question. The master's way of working, for example in his realistic depiction of details in landscape and architecture, also shows Flemish influence and painters from Flanders were teaching masters in Spain. On the other hand, the master of Castelsardo could also have been an Italian painter who was under the influence of Catalan painting. It has been suggested to identify him with Gioacchino Cavaro , but this remains controversial.

Several panel paintings in Sardinia are ascribed to the master of Castelsardo . Some other fragments of his work can be seen in the Museo di Arte Sacra in the crypt of the Cathedral of Sant 'Antonio Abate in Castelsardo, pictures of four apostles, the Archangel Michael and God the Father. His Petrus altar can also be found in the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo in Tuili, in Cagliari . Works in Corsica are also assigned to him, including a crucifixion scene from the Saint-François monastery near Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano in Corsica. The work was created before 1500 and is now kept in the town hall there. Another work by the master is said to come from the monastery, a Trinity altar, today in Saccargia. A Madonna with Child and Saints by the Master, probably also from Sardinia, is now kept in the Birmingham Museum of Art in England.
