Siccation

Dead potato plants

Desiccation (translated: dehydration ) is the process in agriculture, in which crop stocks Sikkanten for the purpose of Abreifebeschleunigung are killed. A welcome side effect is the simultaneous killing of weeds, the still green parts of which would otherwise be harvested with the grain and increase the moisture content of the crop. For economic reasons, this process is considered necessary in conventional cultivation, for example in order to generate a profit in winter rape in wet harvest conditions, increased weed growth and growth.

application

Mainly products containing glyphosate , glufosinate and diquat are used, as well as carfentrazone-ethyl and pyraflufen-ethyl . The amount of water used in rapeseed must be at least 400 liters per hectare to ensure that all green parts of the plant are reliably wetted .

The siccation of potatoes promotes ripening and thus an earlier harvest date is possible. With increasing ripeness, the skin strength improves, which favors undamaged, better storable harvests. In addition, the risk of brown rot infection is reduced with peeled potatoes. If the desiccation is carried out too early, this can lead to a loss of yield. In order to monitor the starch content, the underwater weight is regularly checked before the measure . The siccation in potatoes also serves to prevent virus migration from the herb into the seed potatoes.

The Julius Kühn Institute found in 2007 that the majority of the plant protection measures, and thus also the siccation, were adequate. In concrete terms, this was true in 91% of the cases in arable farming and in 86% of the cases in field vegetable production.

Glyphosate requirements (Germany)

In Germany, late applications of pesticides with the active ingredient glyphosate in grain have only been permitted since 2014 on those partial areas on which harvesting would otherwise not be possible due to overgrowth in stored stands or growth in stored or standing stands. The aim is to limit the application to those situations and partial areas in which the aim is to avert damage. For the area of application “monocot and dicot weeds before harvest”, this means: Late weed growth is not generally considered harmful, but only where weed growth has occurred in the stored grain and if harvesting without weed control is not possible. Correspondingly, it can only be used for siccation where the grain ripens unevenly and harvesting without treatment is not possible, but not for controlling the harvesting date or optimizing the threshing .

When using some glyphosate products in Bavaria, the requirement was that the straw must not be used for animal feed. According to the LfL, the cause is concerns about the toxicity of co-formulants in the formulation of various glyphosate herbicides, for which no specific studies have yet been carried out on the safety in use as animal feed.

According to the Hessen State Office for Agriculture, there is a ban on using glyphosate-treated grain for seeds and brewing grain .
