Willem Bartsius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willem Bartsius (* around 1612 in Enkhuizen ; † probably after 1639 ) was a Dutch painter.

Willem Bartsius was a brother-in-law of the painter Pieter Potter . Little is known about his life. He was believed to have worked in Leiden in the late 1620s and early 1630s . His early style resembles the work of Pieter Potter and Gerrard Dou . In later years he evidently oriented himself towards Pieter Codde and Anthonie Palamedesz . In 1634 he was a member of the painters' guild in Alkmaar and trained among others Abraham Meyndertsz . In 1636 he lived in Amsterdam . From 1639 onwards all trace of him is lost.

Although few works have survived, the works cover a wide range of image types. In addition to portraits, marksmen and society pieces, he also painted a number of biblical depictions.
