Willem Karel Hendrik Karstens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willem Karel Hendrik Karstens (born February 4, 1908 in Leiden , † August 24, 1989 in Nieuwegein ) was a Dutch botanist.

Life

Willem Karel Hendrik was the son of the teacher Matthijs Willem Karstens (* July 13, 1867 in Zoeterwoude; † November 20, 1950 in Oss) and his wife Elisabeth Blankwaardt, who was married on June 30, 1898 in Leiden (* March 11, 1873 in Leiden; † April 10, 1937 in Wassenaar). He had attended the Christian high school (HBS) in Leiden and started studying biology at the University of Leiden . In 1937 he became a conservator at the botanical laboratory in Leiden, which office had been established in 1934.

In December 1938 Karstens obtained his doctorate in natural sciences under Lourens Gerhard Marinus Baas Becking on the subject of Anthocyanin and Anthocyanin formation in seedlings of Gagopyrum escelentum Moench . On October 29, 1947, he was appointed lecturer for botany at the Leiden University by royal resolution. He took on this task on November 9, 1948 with the opening reading De kennis van de inwendige structuur van de hogere plans .

On October 23, 1957 he received the extraordinary professor for plant anatomy in Leiden, which task he took over on May 16, 1958 introductory speech Het wonder der differentiatie .

In the same year he became head of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden and the associated Imperial Herbarium, as the successor to the healthily ailing Taco Hajo van den Honert (1899-1959). After Honert's death, on December 30, 1959, he took over the full professorship with a teaching position for general botany.

During his professorship, he mainly dealt with the anatomy of plants and held various functions at the Royal Dutch Botanical Association and the Royal Dutch Society for Horticulture. His historical research on the history of Hortus should be mentioned in literary terms.

On June 22, 1973 he retired from his professorship and held his farewell college on November 28, 1973. In this context, he was awarded the knighthood of the Order of the Dutch Lion on September 28, 1973 . After he died, his body was buried on August 29, 1989.

Karstens married on October 22, 1942 in Leiden with Dorothea Wilhelmina Gesiena Wicherink (born October 7, 1913 in Alkmaar; † July 1, 2009 in Doorn), daughter of Jan Willem Wicherink (born October 3, 1871 in Amsterdam; † 3. April 1946 in Wassenaar). The marriage remained childless.
