Willem Johannes Witteveen (born May 5, 1952 in Rotterdam , Netherlands ; † July 17, 2014 near Hrabowe , Donetsk Oblast , Ukraine ) was a Dutch lawyer and politician and at the time of his death a member of the First Chamber of the States General . He belonged to the Partij van de Arbeid .

Witteveen studied law at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden . From 1979 to 1989 he taught as a research assistant at the University constitutional law . He received his PhD on June 1, 1988. Since 1990 Witteveen has been Professor of Law at the Universiteit van Tilburg .

For the Partij van de Arbeid, Witteveen worked as editor and part of the editorial team of the magazine Socialisme & Democratie . In 1999 he was elected to the First Chamber of the States General and was a member of it until 2007 and from January 2013 until his death. In the Senate, he mainly dealt with legal and internal affairs and was temporarily chairman of the internal committee.

Witteveen, his wife and daughter were killed when a Boeing 777 was shot down on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine . Witteveen left a son.

Witteveen's father was former Finance Minister Johan Witteveen and his great-grandfather was Amsterdam City Councilor Floor Wibaut ( SDAP ).
