Urbanek began as an assistant director in DEFA's so-called “ Das Stacheltier ” productions , a satirical short film series comprising several hundred titles, before he was allowed to direct himself from the 1960s onwards. Together with Klaus Rümmler, he wrote the script for the "first official television series of the GDR ", Rote Bergsteiger , which he then also filmed as a director.
