Rote Bergsteiger is the first "official" television series of the GDR , which was produced in 1967 by director Willi Urbanek , who also wrote the screenplay with Klaus Rümmler , for the German television network (DFF) .
The series described the anti-fascist efforts of a group of Saxon mountaineers who resisted the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1936 . Red mountaineers were based on real events (see United Climbing Department ). The series became a big hit for the DFF.

Additional information
The television series was mainly filmed in black and white at locations around Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland . The shooting took about ten months and was accompanied by a large number of now well-known actors. A lot had to be improvised in the series, so that a number of amateur actors as well as extras came into play.
