William Bull

William Bull (* 1828 in Winchester , Hampshire , † June 1, 1902 in Chelsea ) was a British plant hunter , tree nursery owner and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " W.Bull ".

He earned his first service as a plant hunter for the contemporary well-known houses Rollisson and Sons and EG Henderson & Son . In 1861 Bull bought a nursery from John Weeks on King's Road in Chelsea, in the immediate vicinity of the Veitch and Sons house . Bull competed with this by specializing in orchids , which he not only cultivated but also consciously crossed.

Bull introduced plants from Colombia (1880) and Liberia into culture and made numerous initial descriptions . The plant hunters Edward Shuttleworth and John Carder worked for him .

In 1897 Bull received the Victoria Medal of Honor from the Royal Horticultural Society . He died on June 1, 1902 after a three-day illness, his son William took over the nursery.
