William D. Furley

William D. Furley (* 1953 in London , United Kingdom ) is a British-German classical philologist (focus on Greek studies ).

William Furley is the son of the classical philologist and philosophy historian David Furley . He studied Classics at University College London , where his father was a University Lecturer from 1947 to 1966. In 1976, Furley studied for a year at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen with Konrad Gaiser , before completing a doctorate at Trinity College Cambridge with Geoffrey S. Kirk . After receiving his doctorate in 1979 on fire in the Greek religion , he returned to Tübingen as a research assistant in the philological seminar until he switched to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg as assistant to Albrecht Dihle , where he became an adjunct professor. He has also taken on representations at the universities of Tübingen, Mannheim and Saarbrücken on various occasions . In 2006 he was ST Lee Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Classical Studies , London. In 2014/2015 he spent a research stay at the Collegium de Lyon .

In addition to his academic career, Furley pursues an interest in modern British poetry with his own readings, publications and the co-edition of a literary magazine.

Furley's first marriage was to Alexandra Furley, with whom he has two children, and his second marriage to Inga Gotsiridze-Furley from Tbilisi, Georgia.

Furley's research areas are classical Greek literature , Greek religious history (especially fire, Andokides and the Hermenfrevel as well as Greek hymns ) and Menander as well as literary papyrology .
