William Davies (* in Montevideo ; † 1956 ) was a Uruguayan football player .
career
The native Montevidean of English origin, who predominantly played in the position of a defender, was one of the most important players in the predecessor club of the Uruguayan Club Atlético Peñarol , which at that time was still under the name Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC) . In 1896 he joined the club and from then on played alongside other players who shaped the club's history, such as Edmundo Acebedo , Lorenzo Mazzucco and Juan Pena . At that time he and his teammates won the Copa Uruguaya in 1900, 1901, 1905 and 1907 . Sometimes Davies also ran as a center forward and goalkeeper. Until 1907 he was a member of the team. William Davies was the brother of Thomas Bower Davies , who served as captain of the CURCC in 1894 and partly in the years 1895 to 1897. William Davies was also a successful athlete outside of the football field. So he was both in Montevideo and in Buenos Aires champion over 100 meters and in the hurdles. Later he was represented in a management position of the club and from 1917 he was an honorary member of the club. After his death, he was buried in the Cementerio Británico in Uruguay's capital, covered with a flag of Peñarol.
