English Electric Canberra - one of Petter's aircraft developments

William Edward Willoughby Petter (born August 8, 1908 , † May 1, 1968 in Béruges , France ) (also Teddy Petter ) was an English aeronautical engineer.

Petter was a descendant of the founders of Westland Aircraft . He joined the company in 1929 and six years later became its technical director. Petter designed there e.g. B. the successful patterns Lysander and Welkin .

He left the Westland factories when they concentrated on the new helicopters at the end of the Second World War and stopped developing fixed-wing aircraft. He took a position at English Electric and developed the Canberra there . During the development of the English Electric Lightning , differences of opinion arose between Petter and the management of English Electric, so that Petter switched to Folland and constructed the Gnat and the Midge there .
