William Fontleroy

William Fontleroy (born October 20,  1978 ) is a retired American basketball player .

career

The 1.91 meter tall player from Gary , Indiana  , was a member of the college team of Southwest Missouri State University (later renamed Missouri State University) until 2000 . Fontleroy was known for his jumping ability, which he used, among other things, for powerful hoops. With 1133 points, he was in 16th place in the university's eternal basketball list when he left it in 2000. His 471 assists were the second best value in the team's history.

He began his career as a professional basketball player in the 2000/01 season with BSG SFL / OSC Bremerhaven in the 2nd Bundesliga North in Germany . In Bremerhaven he became a fan favorite. In his second year of play in Bremerhaven, the American achieved outstanding scores, scoring 25.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and initiating an average of 4.2 basket hits for his teammates per game. In the 2002/03 season he played for Aix-Maurienne in the second division of France and came to 14.4 points per game, but had to sit out for a long time due to an eye injury.

Fontleroy was under contract with the Austrian Bundesliga club Arkadia Traiskirchen in the 2003/04 game year and achieved 16 points and 5.3 assists per match. In the summer break of 2004 he returned to Bremerhaven, the team had meanwhile been renamed Eisbären . Under coach Sarunas Sakalauskas , Fontleroy was promoted to the Bundesliga with Bremerhaven in the 2004/05 season.

At the end of September 2005, the French first division club Cholet Basket signed the American. It remained a brief stint in Cholet, Fontleroy was used in three league games and scored 3.3 points per encounter. He then moved to InterCollege Etha Engomis in Cyprus . It was the last stop of his career as a professional basketball player.

In his home country Fontleroy worked as a basketball youth coach. His daughter Ysabella became a talented basketball player. In 2019, he was inducted into the Missouri State University Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements as a player .
