William Gordon of Lochinvar (also William de Gordon ; † around 1455) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He came from a branch of the Clan Gordon and was the son of Roger Gordon, Laird of Stitchill († around 1442). While still alive, his father gave him his lands, especially the feudal barony Stitchill near Kelso in Berwickshire . This fiefdom was confirmed to William with a deed dated February 27, 1440.

His family also owned some estates in Galloway since 1297 , but it was only William who became the first member of his clan to settle in Galloway. He was enfeoffed on June 6, 1450 with the feudal barony Lochinvar in the parish of Dalry . It is unclear where exactly his residence was; it may have been a predecessor of what would later become Kenmure Castle . He founded the Gordons of Lochinvar family line , which subsequently gained some influence in south-west Scotland.

He had at least five children:

  • Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar († after 1517), ⚭ (1) Annabella Boyd, daughter of 1st Lord Boyd ( Clan Boyd ), ⚭ (2) Elizabeth Lindsay ( Clan Lindsay );
  • Alexander Gordon of Auchinreoch († after 1490);
  • George Gordon of Troquhain, Barvoranby and Craig ⚭ Janet Maclellan;
  • Roger Gordon ⚭ Geylles Macnaught of Crogo;
  • Margaret ⚭ 1746 Thomas Maclellan of Bomby.

William is documented for the last time on August 7, 1450, when a transfer of lands to his eldest son John Gordon by William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas , was confirmed. Probably William lived until 1455. His estates as Laird of Lochinvar and Stitchill inherited his eldest son John.
