William Harris Ashmead (born September 19, 1855 in Philadelphia , † October 17, 1908 in Washington, DC ) was an American entomologist . His work on hymenoptera is best known .

Life

Ashmead was the son of Albert Sydney Ashmead (1829-1916) and Elizabeth Ashmead, nee Graham (1823-1910). After graduating, Ashmead initially worked for the JB Lippincott Co. publishing house. After moving to Florida, he founded his own agricultural publishing company. Among other things, he published the weekly Florida Dispatch magazine, which was mainly devoted to insect pests. In 1878 Ashmead married Marriet Louisa Douglas Holmes (1860-1926) in Jacksonville . He had a daughter with her. In 1879 Ashmead wrote his first scientific publication and in 1887 became an employee of the Florida State Department of Agriculture. From 1890 he visited Germany to expand his knowledge in the field of entomology. In 1895 Ashmead became Conservation Assistant in the Department of Entomology at the National Museum of Natural History , one of the 19 museums in the Smithsonian Institution . He held this position until his death.

Ashmead worked as a systematist on many groups of insects, mainly on hymenoptera (Hymenoptera), in which he described numerous species anew.
