William Hornby (4th quarter 1899 in Blackpool or Fleetwood , † after 1922) was an English football player .

Career

Coming from the nearby Blackpool Hornby belonged from the summer of 1919 to the squad of the club Fleetwood FC playing in the Lancashire Combination . There he played regularly as a right half-forward over the next two years .

In August 1921 Hornby came to former league rivals Wigan Borough , who competed in the newly formed Football League Third Division North in the 1921/22 season. He made his only competitive appearance on the second match day when he played the center-forward position in place of the injured James Twiss in the first Football League home game in the club's history and scored to equalize in the 1: 4 defeat against Nelson FC shortly after the half-time break . Apart from the goal, he remained relatively inconspicuous according to the press and was subsequently no longer considered in the first team. After the season he is said to have returned to Fleetwood.
