WYD Mitchell

William John Thomas Mitchell (* 1942 ) is an American art historian . He is Professor of English and History of Art at the University of Chicago .

Mitchell is internationally recognized as one of the leading theorists in the field of image science , especially his monographs Iconology (1986) and Picture Theory (1994). He is the editor of Critical Inquiry and October contributor .

In 2004/2005 Mitchell was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . In 2008, two books by Mitchell appeared in German for the first time. In 2014 he was elected to the American Philosophical Society and in 2017 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
