William Latimer was the only son of William Latimer, 2nd Baron Latimer and his first wife Lucy Thwing . His mother separated from his father around 1304, and after a lengthy legal battle, their marriage was annulled before 1312. After the death of his father in 1327 William inherited his possessions and the title of Baron Latimer . Before 1328 he was knighted.

Latimer fought in Scotland during the Second Scottish War of Independence . As Knight Banneret and Crown Vassal , he led a squad of 81 men-at-arms . During the summer offensive of 1335 he belonged, along with other English magnates, to the army that advanced northwards via Berwick along the east coast of Scotland under the command of the pretender Edward Balliol . In September 1335 he was a member of the small force that made an advance to western Scotland under Balliol from Perth .
