William M. Brashear

William Matt Brashear (born September 5, 1946 in Ithaca , † February 2, 2000 in Spencer ) was a German-American papyrologist .

William M. Brashear studied Classical Philology in the United States, Rome and Berlin. From 1971 to 1981 he was a research fellow at the Egyptian Museum in Berlin-Charlottenburg and from 1981 until his death director of the papyrus department in Berlin (West).

His main research interests included the Greek magical papyri. His contribution to the book series Rise and Decline of the Roman World (ANRW) is regarded today in papyrology as the standard work on this topic.
