Herwig Maehler

Herwig Maehler FBA (born April 29, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German classical philologist and papyrologist .

Maehler received his doctorate in 1963 from the University of Hamburg and worked as a research assistant at the papyrus collection in Berlin and as a lecturer at the Free University . Here he completed his habilitation in 1975. From 1979 until his retirement in 2000 he was Professor of Papyrology at University College London . Since 1979 he has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute , since 1990 a full member of the Academia Europaea , since 2000 an honorary member of the University College London, since 2001 a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , since 2007 an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . He is also a fellow of the British Academy .

The Universities of Helsinki (2000), Budapest (2001) and Rome (Tor Vergata) (2003) awarded Maehler her honorary doctorate. Maehler lives in Austria today.
