William Robert Fearon

William Robert Fearon (born October 14, 1892 - December 27, 1959 ) was an Irish biochemist and politician.

Fearon taught biochemistry at Trinity College in Dublin and was a member of the Seanad Éireann , the Irish Senate and Upper House of the Irish Parliament from 1943 until his death . His textbook Fearon's Introduction to Biochemistry was published in four editions. The last edition appeared after his death in 1961. In 1942 he invented a variant of the Wöhlk reaction , in which he used a solution of methylammonium chloride instead of ammonia . The reaction was used in the urological laboratory to differentiate between gestational diabetes and lactosuria ( milk congestion ) and takes place under alkaline conditions. First of all, methylamine is formed , which is why the test method is generally called “ Fearon's test on methylamine”. Although such a wet chemical detection reaction is obsolete in modern hospital laboratories thanks to better and more precise test methods ( HPLC , GC , rapid laboratory test), it is taught for training purposes and is still used in laboratories with less well-equipped equipment.
