William Tuke

William Tuke (born March 24, 1732 in York ; died 1822 ) was an English businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Psychiatric Hospital Retreat in York.

Tuke was born into a well-known Quaker family. He was involved in the tea and coffee trade from an early age. When a member of his ward died in agony in a home in York, he persuaded the Society of Friends in the spring of 1792 to reform the accommodation of psychiatric patients: break free, nicer surroundings, better nutrition and occupational therapy. His son Henry (1755–1814), his son Samuel (1784–1857) and his sons James Hack Tuke (1819–1896) and Daniel Hack Tuke (1827–1895) also became physicians.
