W. Weisband

William Wolf Weisband (* August 28 jul. / 10. September  1908 greg. In Odessa ; † 14. May 1967 in Washington, DC ) was an American spy.

Weisband was born in the Russian Empire as the son of Russian Jews . His family emigrated to the USA in the 1920s, and he was naturalized there in 1938. In 1942 he joined the United States Army telecommunications reconnaissance as a language specialist .

In 1950 his espionage activities for the Soviet Union were discovered. Weisband had betrayed the VENONA project , among other things . He escaped conviction because the telecommunications intelligence activities were not to be disclosed in legal proceedings. However, he spent a year in prison for failing to comply with a subpoena.
