William Whittlesey († June 5, 1374 in Lambeth , London , England ) was Bishop of Rochester from 1362 to 1364 , Bishop of Worcester from 1363 to 1368 and Archbishop of Canterbury from October 1368 to June 1374 .

Life

Whittlesey was probably in the county of Cambridgeshire and studied at Oxford. He is the nephew of Simon Islip , who was also Archbishop of Canterbury from 1349 to 1366. Whittlesey was made Master of Peterhouse on September 10, 1349, but resigned in 1351. In October 1360 he was elected Bishop of Rochester. He was consecrated on February 6, 1362. On March 6, 1364 he was Bishop of Worcester, before he succeeded Simon Langham Archbishop of Canterbury on October 11, 1368 . However, his tenure as archbishop was uneventful due to his deteriorating health. He died in Lambeth on the night of June 5th to 6th, 1374 .
