William Winn (singer)

William Winn ( May 8, 1828 in Bramham , Yorkshire - June 4, 1888 in London ) was an English oratorio singer ( bass ) and composer .

Life

Winn was trained by Georg Smart and Francesco Schira in London. His first concert was in London's St Martin's Hall in 1885 , where he sang as a soloist in Paulus von Mendelssohn. He soon developed into one of the leading oratorio singers of his generation.

In 1864 he was appointed Gentleman of the Royal Chapel at St James's Palace , and in 1867 he was made Vicar Choral of St Paul's Cathedral . He also composed some popular songs.

His daughter Florence Winn (born 1857) also became a well-known oratorio singer (alto).
