William de Ros, Lord of Kendal († around 1310) was an English nobleman.

William de Ros was a younger son of Robert de Ros, Lord of Wark and his wife Margaret de Brus . His father had inherited his father Robert de Ros of Wark in 1270 , but died in 1274. As a result, Williams' older brother Robert inherited the family's estates and Wark Castle in Northumberland . William, however, inherited Kendal Castle , which his mother had brought into the marriage.

After William's brother changed sides during the war with Scotland, presumably out of love for a Scottish woman, William occupied Wark Castle, securing it for the English. After the English defeat at the Battle of Stirling in 1297, Ros Marmaduke Thwing and Fulk FitzWarine joined, who had been tasked with the defense of Stirling Castle . The Scots besieged the castle until the occupation had to surrender at the end of 1299. The Scottish commander William Wallace spared William's life because his brother changed sides, but had him incarcerated in chains at Dumbarton Castle . It is unknown whether it was triggered or was only released with the Scottish surrender in spring 1304.

After his release, Ros received market rights for Kendal in 1309 . He had married an Elizabeth whose origin is unknown. With her he had at least one son who became his heir:

  • Thomas de Ros, Lord of Kendal (around 1307-1390)

Since his son was still a minor at his death, the guardianship was awarded in 1311 William de Sulleye .
