Kendal Castle is a ruined castle on a drumlin in the town of Kendal in the English county of Cumbria .

history

The castle was built on the site of an earlier castle at the end of the 12th century as the seat of the Fitz Reinfred family , who held the title of Barons of Kendal . Gilbert Fitz Reinfred first had a moth built with an earth wall. At the beginning of the 13th century, William de Lancaster had the castle enclosed with a curtain wall.

The most famous family associated with the castle was the Parr family , which included Queen Catherine Parr , the sixth wife of Henry VIII . Her family had lived in the reign of Edward III from Sir William Parr's marriage to Kendal Castle's heiress Elizabeth Ros in 1383 . there. By the time Catherine Parr was born, the family had long since left the castle, which was already in decline. Catherine's father preferred to live at court in London. Sir Thomas' father was arguably the last Parr to live in Kendal Castle.

The building had been in ruins since the Tudor period . In 1571 it fell to the crown. The imposing walls have been preserved to this day. In 1897 the Kendal Corporation bought Kendal Castle on Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee for "public edification".

The property is freely accessible to the public. It is administered by the South Lakeland District Council .

construction

The round courtyard is surrounded by a wide moat. This ensemble is in turn enclosed by an earth wall and the remains of the collapsed curtain wall. Square and round towers flank the castle wall; on the south side there is a rectangular donjon from the 14th century. Opposite you can see the remains of a knight's hall , which was built over two vaulted cellars. There are also traces of a gatehouse that was reinforced with an earth barbican .
