Willy Gies

Wilhelm "Willy" Gies (born February 1, 1890 ; † September 15, 1931 ) was a German football player and official. He was one of the founders of the Westfalia Schalke club, the forerunner of FC Schalke 04 .

Life

Gies was one of the young people who founded a football club in the Gelsenkirchen district of Schalke , which had recently been incorporated into Gelsenkirchen , in the spring of 1904 , which was initially called Westfalia Schalke and which became FC Schalke 04 in 1924. Gies, a locksmith's apprentice at Küppersbusch , was an active player for around ten years. Until 1909, when he was replaced by the adult Herbert Hilgert , he was together with Gerhard Klopp as president of the association. After Gies was wounded in the World War , he withdrew from club life.

Honors

In 2008, Gies was accepted into the newly founded “Royal Blue Hall of Fame” of FC Schalke 04 as the club's founder.

On June 1, 2015, a plaque was set up in the Schalke fan cemetery in his honor and in honor of the other nine club founders.
