Willy Klawe

Willy Klawe (* 1951 ), qualified sociologist, is professor at the Protestant University for Social Work & Diakonie in Hamburg and scientific director of the Hamburg Institute for Intercultural Education (HIIP).

Professional biography

After studying sociology , social history and criminology at the University of Hamburg , he initially worked as a lecturer in various educational institutions before he became a consultant for the advanced training of socio-educational specialists in the Office for Youth (Landesjugendamt) in Hamburg. His main concern was to make empirical findings and theoretical results from the social sciences understandable and usable for professional specialists.

After five years of activity, he switched to the German Adult Education Association as a consultant for political youth education and built up his own youth education department and a history workshop at the Norderstedt adult education center. During these 13 years numerous publications were made on methods of political youth education, on the history of the Norderstedter area and a highly regarded monograph on the Wittmoor concentration camp at the gates of Hamburg.

In 1995 he moved to the Institute of the Rauhen Haus for Social Practice (isp), a scientific research and advisory institute that later became part of the Protestant University. As part of his research there, he carried out several nationwide research projects on issues relating to youth welfare on behalf of the BMFSFJ.

Since his study "Between Everyday Life and Alaska - Experiential Education in the Aids for Upbringing" (with Wolfgang Bräuer ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Family, Women and Seniors and Youth 1995–1998, he has been continuously involved in the development and differentiation of individual educational aids and their effects. In addition to numerous specialist articles on this field of practice, in 2007 he published the evaluation study “Young people in individual educational measures” and “Processes and impact factors of individual educational measures. An exploratory-reconstructive study ”(2010). Most recently, the study “Abroad as a place to live and learn. Intercultural learning in individual pedagogy ”.

His work focuses on organizational development and evaluation of socio-educational projects, imparting intercultural competence, advice and further training for groups of employees from the fields of social work, social space orientation and concept development in open child and youth work. At the Ev. He teaches at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the “Social Work & Diakonia” course, which is aimed at practitioners who have been working in socio-educational practical fields for a number of years and who are completing their BA degree while working. As the scientific director of the Hamburg Institute for Intercultural Education (HIIP), he organizes intercultural seminars and culturally sensitive advice and accompanies and advises socio-educational institutions on intercultural opening.
