Willy OEMita

William (Willy) Soemita (born March 1, 1936 in Commewijne , Suriname ) is a Surinamese politician. He was a member of parliament and a minister several times .

His father, Iding Soemita, was born in West Java and came to Suriname as a contract worker, where he founded the Kerukunan Tulodo Prenatan Inggil (KTPI) party in 1949 . In August 1972 his son William took over the chairmanship of the Javanese party.

Willy Soemita initially headed the Ministry of Economic Affairs before becoming Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in 1973. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison in 1977 for bribery in agriculture. After the restoration of democracy in Suriname, Soemita regained a ministerial post in 1988 despite his previous conviction. This time he became Minister of Social Affairs and Housing. His term ended in 1990 by a new coup of the military , who as telephone coup became known. From 1991 to 1996 Soemita was again a minister in his previous department.
