Willy Zabasajja

Willy Zabasajja (* around 1957 ; † December 2006 ) was a Ugandan chess player.

He is the Ugandan record champion with nine individual titles and represented his country at eight Chess Olympiads ( 1980 to 1992 and 1996 ). He had his first international assignment for Uganda in 1976 at the age of 19 at the "Counter Olympiad" in Tripoli in 1976 . He reached his highest Elo rating of 2320 in January 1992. According to the Ugandan Chess Federation, he was the first East African FIDE master ; however, the FIDE database did not identify him as the title holder. He made a significant contribution to popularizing the game of chess in his home country. Zabasajja died of complications from a stroke . In February 2008 the Ugandan Chess Federation organized the national rapid chess championship in his memory in Lugogo , a district of Kampala , which Moses Kawuma, Hassan Mulambe and Harold Wanyama won tied.
