Wilton GS Sankawulo

Wilton GS Sankawulo , (* 1937 ; † February 21, 2009 in Monrovia , Liberia ) was Liberia's President and writer from 1995 to 1996.

Life

Sankawulo was born in Haindi and attended the "Kpolopelleh Lutheran School" until 1946. He attended the Lutheran schools in Belefanai and Zorzor and then completed a degree at the Lutheran Training Institute until 1959.

This was followed by a bachelor's degree at Cuttington College (now Cuttington University College) until 1963 . In 1969 he also earned a bachelor's degree in theology from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley . But above all he pursued his talent as a writer.

His most important work was the translation of the Bible into the language of the Kpelle . At an early age he began to write down the fairy tales, myths and legends of his people - the Kpelle. He was professor of English and literature in the faculties of the University of Liberia and Cuttington University College .

After a three-week stay at JFK Hospital, Sankawulo died of heart failure at the age of 75. He left behind his wife Amelia Sankawulo and four children.

On September 1, 1995, Sankawulo became Chairman of the Council of State of Liberia and thus Liberia's head of state . During this troubled time, however, he was not yet able to stabilize the country. He served until September 3, 1996 and was then replaced by Ruth Perry .

literature

Sankawulo was a respected and prominent writer in his country. He mainly dealt with African problems but also with the myths and folklore of the continent.
