Wimble Toot Castle
Wimble Toot Castle is a suspected Outbound hilltop castle near the village Babcary in the English county of Somerset .
Details
The presumed castle was built between 1067 and 1069. Today only a circular earthwork , 27.47 meters in diameter and 2.74 meters high, with trenches on the northwest and southeast side, can be seen. The facility is located on a chain of hills above a stream that flows into the River Cary and the old Roman road Fosse Way .
Opinions about the original purpose of the facility have changed over the years. Originally they were thought to be a barrow from the Bronze Age for the burial of the dead or a windmill hill . According to the latest scientific research, however, it is believed that it is the remains of a moth that was built after the Norman conquest of England .
Wimble Toot Castle was therefore intended to protect the River Cary, especially the 30 km long, navigable stretch of the river between this castle and Down End Castle , which was tactically important for the Normans at the time . It also served to protect the nearby Ilchester settlement in conjunction with the fortified mansion in the village of Sock Dennis . The castle was probably built by a local Norman lord, Robert de Conteville .
Today the complex is considered a Scheduled Monument .
