Winchcombe Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winchcombe Castle is an Outbound Motte in the small town of Winchcombe in the English county of Gloucestershire .

The castle was built in the chaos of anarchy in the 12th century. It was built either in 1140 or 1144 in the northeast of Winchcombe, then a conflict region, and was located on a high mound . Roger Fitzmiles, 2nd Earl of Hereford , a supporter of Empress Matilda , had it docked, but it was directly attacked by King Stephen's troops as early as late 1144 . The castle was destroyed after the attack and was never rebuilt.
