Inside the mill

The Pointe-aux-Trembles windmill is a tower windmill in the Canadian province of Québec , which dates back to the French era . It is located in Montreal in the northeastern district of Pointe-aux-Trembles , on Rue Notre-Dame near the banks of the Saint Lawrence River .

Built the windmill in 1719, in operation it was until 1866. Since 1983, it stands as one of the oldest and one received only eighteen remaining historic windmills in the province under monument protection .

history

In the early 18th century, the Sulpizian order held the lordship of the Île de Montréal . A windmill was built in the immediate vicinity as early as 1671/72, but it was destroyed by flooding in the spring of 1718. The order decided to build a new windmill a little further west. The work began the following year and was under the direction of the master mason Jean-Baptiste Deguire dit La Rose. In 1721 the first miller started work.

The windmill ground the grain from farms in the area, but was out of order from 1803. After the building was raised by one floor in 1822, it was used again. Since the order hardly made any profit with the mill, it stood still from 1838 to 1851. From 1866 onwards, the mill was shut down for good. In 1970 a funeral home built its building right next to the mill.

After the windmill was listed as a historical monument in 1982, there were increased efforts to save it from deterioration. The city of Montreal purchased the windmill in 2001 and demolished the funeral home four years later. A comprehensive restoration was carried out between 2007 and 2009 , and a small park was designed around the building. The costs amounted to 2.4 million CAD .

Building

With a height of 13 meters and four floors, the windmill is the tallest such building in the province. The tower of the mill is a simple round tower made of limestone , the diameter is 5.5 meters at the base and 4.9 meters in the upper area. The shingles of the conical roof of the cap are made of cedar wood . The cap and the wing cross could formerly be turned in front of the wind via a star beam. The four sail gate wings were operated from the ground .

Since most of the mechanics are missing, the system is inoperable. The windmill is open to the public and includes a historical tour. Display boards and multimedia projections explain the history of the mill.
