Graduated windmill

Since the restoration in 1987, training courses for hobby windmillers have been offered at the Britzer Mühle in Berlin. Over 100 volunteer millers have already completed their training with the diploma and are involved in various milling projects.

With the training to become a qualified windmill, the course participants acquire practical and theoretical knowledge of the care, maintenance and handling of a windmill, as well as its inventory and functionality. This is the only way to ensure safe operation and demonstration during public tours and events. The diploma later entitles them to operate the training mill independently.

The training program includes:

  • practical training at the Britzer Mühle
  • practical training on milling projects in Berlin and Brandenburg
  • practical training in the carpentry / training workshop
  • Excursions to windmills and water mills
  • Study trip with practical training in Holland (1 week)
  • Basic course for meteorology in cooperation with the FU, Berlin
  • Basic course in grain and flour science at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Berlin

The training lasts approx. 1½ to 2 years and ends with the oral and practical examination, which is held by an examination committee with at least one Dutch miller. Traditionally, the diploma certificate is also written in Dutch.

This training is not an apprenticeship but makes an important contribution to the maintenance and care of technical monuments in the field of windmills and water mills.
