The Windorf desert is located in the vicinity of the districts of the north-western districts of the city of Saalfeld / Saale and the southern location of the districts of Bad Blankenburg in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

The 14 deserted areas mentioned in a document dated November 19, 1370, including the Windorf desert, were either destroyed in the Blackburg House War (1448–1450) or in the Thirty Years War (1618–1648), or the citizens settled in the 15th and 16th centuries around.
