Winfried Haas

Winfried Haas (born November 5, 1934 ; † January 31, 2007 ) was a German professor of paleontology .

Haas grew up in Neu-Isenburg in what is now the state of Hesse. From 1955 he studied geology and paleontology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and from 1958 at the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1965 under Heinrich Karl Erben . The subject was his future main research area trilobites . He was then a scientific assistant there, completed his habilitation in 1971 and became Professor of Paleontology in Bonn in 1972. In 2000 he retired.

Haas studied trilobites and their way of life. In addition, he dealt with the development of reefs in the Devonian Eifel and the shell structure of cephalopods .

From 1974 to 1998 he published the journal Palaeontographica A with Erben. He was on the German sub-commission for Devonian stratigraphy.

Haas had been a member of the Corps Franconia Jena since 1955 .
