The Salén shipping company operated a large fleet of reefer vessels in the 1960s and 1970s and commissioned the shipyards in Gothenburg and Landskrona to develop and build a series of six fast and versatile reefer vessels. The name winter class was derived from the term "winter" with which all ship names began. The first two ships were the Winter Water and Winter Moon , which entered service in February 1979 . In January 1980 the series was completed with the Winter Sea .
