history

The band was formed in the mid-1980s by Joseph Rizzo (bass) and Steve Caruana Smith (guitar). After a short time their friend Ivan Grech joined them as a singer. The band rehearsed in a garage in Senglea on gray winter days . According to their own statements, the band name was based on the mood of the band members during this time. The line-up was supplemented by Etienne Robinich (keyboards) and James Vella (drums). In the early days, the band only performed in front of local audiences in Malta. During the nineties, the band's new, private radio stations also emerging in Malta opened up new opportunities. The first single Sarah was relatively popular and gave the band the chance to do more productions. The debut album Winter Moods , released in 1996, made it into the top 20 of the Maltese album charts . In 1997, Melvin Caruana (guitar) became the last member of the band to date.

The album Morning Ale , released in 2001, reached number one on the Maltese album charts, the releases Jamaica , Ride and Everyday Song are among the most popular pieces of the band. The following albums Butterfly Horse and Ordinary Man also reached number one in the album charts a few days after their release, Ordinary Man is the band's best-selling album, and Marigold is the most popular single.

Winter Moods has won various awards over the years. They have been nominated for the Malta Music Award four times for best band (1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007). In 2007 Winter Moods finally won the Best Band Award for their hit Marigold , and Ivan Grech won the Best Songwriter Award. In 2003 they also received the Best Album Award for Butterfly House .

The band performed at numerous festivals in Malta and Europe, including 2004 at the Ringfest in Cologne .

In 2009 drummer James Vella left the band. Karl Fenech came for him.

On July 30, 2010 the band gave a concert in Floriana (The Granaries - Fossos), in front of more than 10,000 paying spectators.
