Magdeburg winter harbor
The Winterhafen Magdeburg is a port in the Zollelbe in the Magdeburg district of Werder .
Originally ships were loaded and unloaded directly on the city quay walls to the Elbe. However, this was particularly dangerous in winter when there was ice .
In 1842 , the winter harbor was therefore built as the first separate port facility in Magdeburg. The port has a connection to the Elbe via the Zollelbe . The port itself is located on an island in the Elbe. Due to the silting up of the port, the facility was rebuilt around 1880 . In the course of industrialization , however, shipping traffic grew so rapidly that the capacity of the winter harbor was soon no longer sufficient. As early as 1893 , the city of Magdeburg opened a new port facility in Alte Neustadt .
Since then, the winter harbor in the middle of the city has been used primarily for recreational boating.
